The Ma Passion Story
Ma Passion began its journey in 2001, when a love for history met a passion for art. We aim to preserve, nurture and revive the priceless historical traditions of India’s rich art and craft heritage that are at risk of dying out in this modern age, like the sublime art of gemstone carving, that currently exists mainly in India, China and Germany. We aim to bring these traditions forth from the pages of historical obscurity, into the here-and-now. Creating pieces that never were, and never will be again.
What We Do
We are art lovers before anything else, and our aim is to support local artists, and preserve multigenerational artistic traditions via one-of-a-kind pieces of aesthetic beauty and artistic merit.
How We Do It
We partner with mines across the world, scouring the earth for nature’s rarest, most beautiful gemstones. Each rough is handed over to one of our twenty artists, each one a master in their craft that has been handed down over generations. Together, we create a vision for the final piece, and then, the maestros take over, bringing the gemstones to life in impossible-to-recreate works of art.
Our Craft
We have built a family of artists, holders of generations’ worth of artistic skills and secrets, and multiple National Award winners amongst them. Our only stipulation to them is to safeguard the integrity of the gemstone rough, with as little wastage as possible.
They take into consideration the size, shape, colors and hardness of each stone, before deciding the stories they want to bring forth from it. Each carving can take anywhere from a week to ten years, depending on the size of the stone, and the intricacy of the craft.The result is creations that tell the stories of gods, myths and history, in pieces that fuse the art of nature with the art of man, in a once-in-a-lifetime confluence.
